My Favorite Podcasts (vol.1)

Some time ago a friend of mine has asked me to share some podcasts I like (hi, Ben!). Here are my favorite podcasts. First two are the best, the rest – in no particular order.
  1. 99 Percent Invisible – http://99percentinvisible.org/
A podcast about design. Not just graphical or functional design of THINGS, but of sounds, food, systems like infrastructure, city planning, etc. Roman Mars kept me inspired every day through this summer! Some of my favorite episodes:
  2. RadioLab – http://www.radiolab.org/
Great stories! Good journalism, for the most part.
one of more mind-boggling stories: www.radiolab.org/story/playing-god/
    another though-provoking one: http://www.radiolab.org/story/the_buried_bodies_case/
  3. Science Vs – https://gimletmedia.com/show/science-vs/
They pit wide-spread rumors and factoids vs actual scientific research. It’s well structured and well-argued. Great topics 🙂 Environment, gun control, sex.
  4. Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe – http://www.theskepticsguide.org/podcast/sgu
They don’t do _stories_ as 99% invisible or RadioLab do, but rather it’s a weekly digest of what happened in science and/or pesudoscience, as discussed by a panel of scientists/doctors/science communicators. They have sections of “Forgotten Superheroes of Science”, which reminds us of great scientists of bygone days who have made significant contributions to civilization, but we don’t really remember them as often as we should. “Who’s that noisy?” is a nice sound puzzle. They play a weird sound and ask listeners to send in suggestions of what they think it is. A detailed answer (and winners) is announced the following week. “Science or Fiction” is fun too! Three headlines are discussed by the panelists. One of them is made up, but sounds plausible. They have to figure out which one it is.
  5. Criminal – http://thisiscriminal.com/
Great stories about crime. Solved, unsolved, old and new. Some are pretty depressing, some touch morally ambiguous areas, some bizzare, some plain infuriating! A great listen!
  6. Mortified –  http://getmortified.com/podcast/
Great to relax to, remember young years  and finding that we’re all fragile, we’re all freaks and we all survived 😉
Radiotopia is the family of podcasts which have very high production value (read “well-made”).  These are the people  who make 99% invisible, Criminal, Mortified and many others.
Some of the other good ones are Transistor (from PRX), Talk Nerdy, StartTalk Raio, Song Exploder, Planet Money, Millenial, Startup, The Heart.
